Hanging out with the kid
It's always a treat to spend the day with a kid. They make you remember how it is to be simple and carefree. Nothing is complicated. Anything can be solved with a smile or a hearty laugh. When it is enough that you know how to count from one to ten...and can color those pictures without going beyond the lines.
Yet nothing can beat seeing your own kid blossom from a baby to a little girl. The child remains intact, but you get more out of her already. Gone is the gummy smile and the cooing. Now there's a little person coming out of her shell.
I see a child who is trying to conquer the world. A little person who believes that a smile and a please or thank you can make everything okay. A little person who believes that sorry can always bring back the happiness that was nipped by mischief. As I watch this little person evolve, I realize that what I need is to see the world through her eyes to bring back my faith in the goodness of life. Come to think of it, a smile, a thank you, a sorry and that one hello are all we need to be happy.
